I.D.E.A.L.

Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Anti-Racism, Learning

We support the views of Cato Laurencin MD, PhD that we need to shift from a system of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) to a system of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Anti-Racism, and Learning (IDEAL). In this revised framework, it directly challenges biases and promotes the necessary work needed to learn to be more than just an ally. Dr. Laurencin’s description of his I.D.E.A.L. path is linked at the top of the page. I was introduced to this way of thinking during the 2021 Society For Biomaterials Annual Meeting where Dr. Laurencin spoke to his perspective.

Previously, at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Bryan was a member of the Institution’s Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion where he co-led of the committee’s Events working group.

“We must actively work to recognize the obstacles that scientists (and potential scientists) from marginalized communities face, and dismantle structures of power that prevent them from succeeding. We must also consider the effects of our research and research choices on marginalized communities.” Adapted from Sammy Katta. Image created using BioRender.com.
