Bryan presents at the Organic Geochemistry GRC
Dr. Bryan D. James presented his talk, “Pyroplastics in the Ocean: An Unaccounted Source of Pyrogenic Carbon” during the evening session on Wednesday 8/5/26 on “Unraveling the Organic Imprint: Tracing Pollutants, Transformations, and Emerging Threats in the Environment”. The GRC took place at the Holderness School in Holderness, NH from 8/2 to 8/7 with the theme, “Integrating Molecular-Level and Global-Scale Processes”.
The Organic Geochemistry GRC is a premier, international scientific conference focused on advancing the frontiers of science through the presentation of cutting-edge and unpublished research, prioritizing time for discussion after each talk and fostering informal interactions among scientists of all career stages. The conference program includes an array of speakers and discussion leaders from institutions and organizations worldwide, concentrating on the latest developments in the field. The conference is five days long and held in a remote location to increase the sense of camaraderie and create scientific communities, with lasting collaborations and friendships. In addition to premier talks, the conference has designated time for poster sessions from individuals of all career stages, and afternoon free time and communal meals allow for informal networking opportunities with leaders in the field.
This conference brings together leading experts and rising stars to explore the most recent advances in the study of organic matter in natural systems, with particular emphasis on the interdisciplinary nature of modern organic geochemistry. We examine how state-of-the-art tools—such as advanced biomarker analysis, compound-specific stable isotopes, multi-omics methods, data analytics, and modeling—can be applied to address a wide range of global challenges. Key themes include the transformation and preservation of organic matter over geological timescales; unraveling past and present climate dynamics; investigating the role of microorganisms in the global cycling of elements; identifying biosignatures and processes in extreme environments and on other planetary bodies; employing multi-omic approaches to integrate biological and chemical insights; tracing the sources and fate of contaminants; and advancing knowledge at the frontiers of energy research.
